Conquering Panama, West to East

So, you’re new to Panama. You want to get to know the country and the people who live there. You want to see what Panama is all about. How can you conquer the country? You should go on an adventure.

The narrow isthmus of Panama stretches more from West to East than North to South. So, if you start on the west (north) side of the island. Starting in the upper left corner (lol) of the island is a great way to get introduced to Panama’s natural beauty.

Boca town, the capital of Bocas del Toro Province, is known for stunning scuba dives, and miles of deserted beaches. After you take the ferry back from Bocas town you can head a little bit south to the Amistad international park. Butted by national parks in Panama, the Amsted area is a world heritage site and home to over 600 species of birds, 5 species of big cats and thousands of other species of jungle flora and fauna.

So, you’re probably a bit tired of roughing it; you’re probably ready for a nice meal with excellent ambiance. You’re also probably rolling in to Penonome– so you should stop by Gastronomia Mar Del Sur. This restaurant boasts high quality south-American fare and excellent cocktails. It’s a great way to get back to civilization.

Now you’ve made it significantly far east, you have arrived at the panama canal. One of the greatest feats of engineering in the modern world. An especially breathtaking part of the canal is the Bridge of the Americas spanning the canal and is a major part of the pan-American highway.

A bit south of there, and at the end of the land you can see you will find the Pearl Islands. These beautiful islands feature white sandy beaches and deep green forests. You may recognize the lovely landscape from the TV show survivor– it was where season 3 took place.

After enjoying the whit-shandy beaches and rural charm of the Pearl Islands, you can easily make your way to Panama City, the largest city in the country. In Panama City you should cruise down to the “hippest neighborhood in Central America:” Casca Viejo. Viejo is a small peninsula with a big history, being a favorite hangout of the likes of Manuel Norriega, and occasionally visited by pirates (in another time).

Now it is a strikingly cool neighborhood that strikes a balance between being welcoming to expats and legit panama. It’s definitely a can’t miss on your trip. Heading East and North from Panama City, you get to the San Blas Islands. At San Blas you can see get a picture of pre-colonization Panama. The islands are still under control of the Kuna, the Panamanian natives. The Kuna are, however, welcoming to tourists and spending some time with them on the pristine beaches of San Blas you will soon forget the crowds of Panama City and be transported to another time in history.

From there you can make your way to La Palma. In La Palma you are officially back in civilization— sort of.  From La Palma you can chart your own course in to the reaches of the Darien Province jungles and find numerous adventures amongst the wildlife; while resting assured that you while traversing the country from West to East you have conquered the isthmus of Panama, and elevated your ex-pat status to almost-local…just brush up on your Spanish.
